All I wanted for Christmas...

...was to get the painting finished in the basement.  Instead my painter gave me two of his original paintings.  I have been working all day every day since Christmas to finish the painting.  I think I will finish everything but touch up and the baseboard in the stairway today.  In the meantime I will contemplate the two paintings.

Saturday was spent fixing the TV...

The quality of the picture on the TV in the exercise room was not stellar.  The cable signal came into the basement and then went up to the master bedroom on the second floor where the reciever was located.  All the other TVs in the house (with the exception of the HD in the family room) work on backfeed off the receiver in the master bedroom.  Needless to say there are several inline amplifiers to try and get a good signal throughout the system.  But it seemed impossible to get a really good signal into the exercise room.  Since we no longer watch television in the master bedroom, we decided that we would move the receiver to the exercise room.  I had to put in two cable connectors and an addditional outlet at the place where we wanted to put the reciever.  You can see the receiver and outlets in this picture on top of the shelves (which were also added yesterday.) Work still remains as the quality of the pictures in the bedrooms is not good. I have to get up into the attic and put in an electric outlet, and a signal amplifier to each of the bedroom lines. I hate going into the attic.

As you can see from this picture we are making progress on getting ready to paint the studio. All the closet doors are in now at Home Depot, so we can complete all the casing and finish the painting. The color of the studio is going to be Behr Smoked Oyster (780A-2). This a fairly neutral color which should not lend a color cast to pictures taken in the studio.  I am really getting anxious to get this all done.

The mirror is up...
For her birthday I gave Carolyn a mirror and exercise (ballet) bar.  The mirror arrived and was installed yesterday (her birthday), but the ballet bar was delayed because of a backorder on the mounts.  Here are some pictures of the mirror.

Our handymen/painters/decorators have helpfully laid out the choices in colors for us.  What do you suggest as the color scheme for the Exercise Room.

Interim Progress Report - The Exercise Room Nears Completion

Carolyn and I have been living in our house in Sandy for 21 years now.  I certainly doesn't seem that long, but the calendar doesn't lie.  Our house has a 900 sq ft basement, which is 1/3 of the square footage potentially available in the house.  I have described the origins of the remodelling project in another blog.  This is simply a progress report.  Notably, all of the sheetrocking has been completed, including the ceilings,  the enitre basement has been tiled,  most of the baseboard and casement is in place.  Biggest job left is the painting and mounting three more doors which had to be special ordered.

The area of the basement which had been my photography studio and framing shop will now be the Exercise Room

Because both Carolyn and I are in need of getting back onto the exercise equipment, and since it seems to be taking forever to get the work completed, I dragged all of the equipment from where it had been being temporarily store out into what will become the Exercise Room.  I have put a ceiling mounted TV into the room.  I will also be putting my bike trainer into the room.  We have a weight bench and a set of adjustible weights which go from 2.5 lbs to 52.5 lbs.

The weights are sitting on the rack to the left in this picture.  The whiteboard on the stand to the right of the picture is where I keep my training schedule.  If you turn around 180 degrees from this picture this is what you see.  This used to be two rooms.

The area, roughly from the television set toward the camers, used to be the exercise room.  This entire room now will become my photography studio.  The back of the room was completely unfinished at the start of the project.  There was a wall between the two rooms.  There were also two windows on the wall to the right.  When we extended our deck, we covered up the window wells, and since they were totally useless, I covered them.

The final picture is taken from the area of the walker.  You see the studio entrance to the right.  In the middle is a closet under the stairs which will have a regular door on it, and the entrance to the room from the stairway is to the left.

I will post some additonal pictures on the remainer of the basement in another blog.

My Electrical Saga

As you may or may not know, I am trying to finish off my basement.  Half of it was sort of finished off in 1991 when my son Mike came back from Desert Storm and got out of the Marines.  He thought he might like to finish off an apartment, and live there for a while.  Some additional work was done on half of the other half a couple of years later by a "friend" of the family who needed the work.  He did some framing, some sheet rocking, and electrical work.  And then the basement sat there accumulating tools, old paint cans, and scraps of this and that.

This summer I decided that I would move all my tools into the garage, and make a shop there.  That project took a couple of months, but I finally got all the tools out of the basement.  The paint cans were gathered up and taken to hazardous waste disposal.  (We had one of those at the Old Lilacs... it was called the old cellar hole, and probably qualifies for the EPA Superfund program.)  That left just a lot of miscellaneous junk which I have been slowly throwing away or donating to charity.

One thing holding me back from completing the basement was the lack of adequate electrical circuits.  There were still spaces in the breaker panel, but it was impossible to get to the back of the panel without tearing down some sheet rock.  However, when we installed Central Air last year, we had to get into the panel to add a new circuit for the compressor.  I took that opportunity to fill out the panel with two more 20 amp lines.

So about a month or so ago, I attacked the remainder of the basement and completed all of the outlet circuits and put recessed cans in the ceiling.  Then I hired Cameron (who is our painter, and looking for jobs to do) to do the sheet rock, taping and painting.  Cameron's cousin, Nate, came along to help, and to do some final framing work that was required (we actually tore down a wall between two of the rooms).  In the process of doing something, he noticed that one of the outlets had a small current on the ground wire.  It was not very strong, but it was definitely a leak somewhere in the circuit.  I was filled with visions of having to rip down massive amount of sheet rock to find the wiring error.

I began the job of troubleshooting the electrical leakage this past weekend.  Since Karl happened to be online, I enlisted his opinions how how to approach the problem.  I got out a Voltmeter, and took a variety of readings, many of which were totally incomprehensible.  Just before he had to leave (probably to finish building his rear wheel) Karl suggested that I try connecting the "hot" ground with the ground on another circuit and see what current was flowing across that.

When I succeeded in making the aforementioned connection an alarm went off.  I thought that it must have been the Home Security alarm.  We have discontinued the Security Service (we never dared to set the alarm when we were away), and I thought that the alarm was still somehow connected, and reacted to the current on the ground wire.  So I completely disassembled the Security system and unwired the alarm.

Then I tried connecting the "hot" ground to the other ground again.  Same result... alarm went off.  So now I figured it must be the smoke detector.  There was one in the basement, and one on the second floor landing.   But when I went to look for the one in the basement, it was no where to be seen.  It had been buried under the sheet rock.

Out came the cutting tool, and after two attempts, I located the smoke detector and pulled it down through the ceiling to see what might be going on.  Now, if you aren't familiar with smoke detectors, this is going to take some explaining.  The smoke detector in the basement and the smoke detector on the second floor landing were connected by a 3 wire cable (3 wires plus ground).  The power to the smoke detectors is carried on the black (hot), and white (common) wires.  The third wire (red) is used to communicate between the detectors.  If one of the detectors detects smoke, it send out a 9 volt current on the third wire, and all the detectors then sound the alarm.

When "friend" did some wiring in the basement, he had used the three wire cable as the source of the power for the new circuit.  For some reason, the ground on the three wire cable had been snipped off... It wasn't connected to anything, and really wasn't readily visible.  So "friend" must have assumed that the third wire (red) was the ground, and hooked up the ground on the new wiring to the red wire.  I am not sure how the current got into the red wire, and then into the ground wire on the new circuit, but when I tore the whole thing apart and rewired it correctly, MY PROBLEM WAS SOLVED!!!!!!

And that is my story and I am sticking to it!

Dug up the Dahlia bulbs today

It was a beautiful day in Sandy.  Temperatures in the mid 70s, so it was a great day to work in the yard.  I got the Zinnias and tomatoes out of the back garden, and dug the Dahlia bulbs our of the garden along the fence.  Tomorrow I will dig the bulbs out of the front gardens.  I also have to go down and winterize Char's house.  This involves turning off her sprinklers, disconnecting, draining, and wrapping the swamp cooler, and making sure that all the hoses are unscrewed from the outside taps, drained, and stored in her garage.

In the meantime, I am rebuilding Carolyn's 'I Do" Weddings web site.  The existing site is here; and the new site (under construction) is here.  Comments and suggestions on the new site are welcome.  She gets a lot of hits on her site, and we need to find a way to turn more of those hits into ceremonies.  She has actually been fairly busy, with four weddings this month.

My New Laptop... A Dell XPS

I am posting this from my new laptop, using Windows Live Writer.  My new laptop is a birthday gift from Carolyn... it arrived a few days early, and of course you can't just let something like a new laptop
sit in a box.  I am using Google Chrome as my primary browser, but for certain applications (like MSN mail or MSN Messenger (chat)) Vista forces you to use Explorer.  I really do like the Google Chrome Interface.  Getting used to a new computer and operating system is always an interesting journey, and is also an opportunity to start fresh without all the junk that inevitably creeps into your computer, and gets loaded into memory every time you start up.  I need to start finding all the drivers I need to connect the laptop to all the printers and other stuff I have, and to install stuff like Photoshop... so I will let you know how things go.

Its been six days...

... since I have blogged.  My major preoccupation during this time has been the presidential campaign. But I willl leave discussion of religion and politics to the squirrels (who have also been silent for the past few days).
This blog will discuss how I begin my day.
One of the things which I do for my employer, CSC (Computer Science Corporation), is to manage an account where we have about 80 people in India doing development projects for a client based in Birmingham, Alabama.  Management is done 100% through teleconfrences, email, and on-line chat.  Because of time zone differences, (India is +5.5 and Utah is -7) the only good time to call is in the early (sometimes very early) morning hours.
During the summer it is daylight when I do the morning teleconferences; and, now, it is clear that fall is here because the calls start while it is dark outside.  I usually have Lillian to help me with these calls, as once she has breakfast she often comes to sleep in the hammock in my office.
One of my early morning jobs (before the calls start) is to feed the cats.  George is usually right at my feets the minute I come back in the door from getting the paper.  George generally eats a samll can and a half of cat food in the morning; but now that we are buying the larger cans, it is more like 3/4 of a can.  Then Alice Walter shows up, and I have to feed him on the counter, or George would have his food too.  Henry may then come wandering in.  He generally just licks the sauce off the wet food and then eats dry food.  Finally... at some point in the process, I have to take a plate up to put on the bed where Lillian and Carolyn are sleeping.  Lillian will start bothering Carolyn to wake her up if she is not fed at the appropriate time.
In between the feeding of the cats is the making of the coffee, if Carolyn has not gotten it ready from the night before.  She has done this for the past few days which is really nice for me.
Then, if I have time left, I do the Sudoku in the paper before heading upstairs to start the calls
This morning the whle process started about 4:30, but 5:00 is a more typical time to get up and get going.

I want everyone to know...

...that I have no responsibility what-so-ever for anything regarding either the Squirrels For McCain or the Squrrels For Obama or any of the nuts that post on their sites. My only contact has been through Dimitri, who we thank God has finally made it out of Siberia into Alaska where I think he is going to stay for a while to cover Governor Palin. Last I heard he was headed for Wasilla .

Final Configuration...
Carolyn suggested that the pictures needed to be closer together. So I moved them closer, and they do look better.
Next project is to change the switches, plugs and switch plates throughout the house to match the decorative switches we put in the kitchen and family room. Today I got the living room and dining room completed, and also put a dimmer switch on the cans that are over the family room fireplace. Todays project required only two trips to Home Depot. First to get a circuit tester since I seemed to have misplaced the one I had in the move from the basement to the garage. The second to get a couple of dimmer switches... one for the dining room and one for the cans over the fireplace.
There is still a lot of work to do to finish this project. Most challenging part is finding out which switches and plugs are on which circuit. The guy who wired this house seems to have had a random method of determining which circuit went where.
Big change in the weather going on as I write. Yesterday it was close to 100. tomorrow it is going to be in the 60s. A line of thunderstorms is heading our way.

Almost done...

... as you can see, The White Dahlia made the cut three times. This interesting arrangement needs some adjustment however. Carolyn wants the pictures to be closer together. I will make the adjustment and then post another shot.

The Bee Balm also made the cut, and is in a larger frame in the garage entry way. The Yellow Dahlia did not make the cut.

Our Latest Project...

...was the replacement of the mailbox that was put in when we bought our house 21 years ago. Kevin's (our neighbor) mailbox was in pretty sad shape, so we decided to replace them both at the same time. Actually there was some nostalgia involved as Ed actually helped me put up the old mailbox. Ed and I drove from Granville to Sandy when I moved out, and our first job was to put up a mailbox.

This new mailbox is a locking mailbox with entry from the front or back. The back entry will be nice during the winter so we won't have to go out into the slush which forms in the street to get the mail.

The box is large enough to hold our mail and a family of squirrels.

Carolyn is getting our first delivery of mail from the new mailbox. Luckily she was not bitten by a squirrel.

I am planning on making the photographs in my slide show restricted to family and friends. If you want to become a family or friend you have to register on flickr so that I can designate you as a friend, or family. I have sent an email to everyone in my address book that I want to be a friend or family, but some of you may not have received the email, or it may have gone into your junk mailbox. If you can't find the email, then leave a comment or send me an email at wprattutah@hotmail.com, and unless you are Osama bin Laden, or someonee of his ilk... and I know you, then I will resend the invite. Also email me or leave a comment on this blog if you go to flickr and register without using the email.

For now I have only restricted the slides in the "Other" slideshow. You will know you have been successfully mared as a friend or family when you can see the slides in that show.
